A Quarter Century Christmas

A Quarter Century Christmas
Kylie van Dam
2025
2025, what a time to be alive,
We’ve all seen the news.
And ‘though the news itself can be a grubby little thing,
What it has to work with, what it has to bring us
Does my head in,
Does my head in.
Not so long ago we would have said
‘don’t worry, 2026 will be the year we fix it’.
But with all this conflict, all this pain,
All this history,
It does my head in,
Does my head in.
And now it’s Christmas time.
What to do with Christmas time?
Love grows in giving.
Love grows in sharing.
And love grows in rest,
Love grows in play.
Faith grows in giving.
Faith grows in sharing.
And faith grows in rest,
Faith grows in play.
These are the gifts,
The gifts of Christmas Day.
Compassion, empathy
Are as human as can be
But we’ve seen the news.
And though people day and night
Are working hard to counteract,
The fact that facts mean nothing
And actors choose to act
Does my head in,
Does my head in.
Our faith in humankind is being tested
By the kinds of human…
In love with shock and awe,
Guns and golden towers,
Cynical abusers of
Fear and vested power
And it does my head in,
Does my head in.
To remember our shared humanity.
To remember our faith in humanity.
To remember our own humanity…
On Christmas Day.
