Unit 1: To Describe
The Girl with the Curls
Kylie van Dam
2021
When I was young there was a girl
As beautiful as could be.
Her curls were red, she wore them long,
What a sight to see.
And her pretty round face
Only had eyes for me.
A happier boy in all the land
Never could there be.
But then came the man on the hill
With his earrings and his leather boots
And his strange exotic smells.
He sold the girls the dresses
He showed them how to wear
And he sold them lots of pretty things
For their feet up to their hair.
My girl, her head, her head was turned,
Turned away from me.
Her curls, she put them up,
Never more free.
And her pretty round face
Only had eyes to see
All the sparkling things in the shop on the hill
And never more me!
Oh how I hated the man on the hill
With his earrings and his leather boots
And his strange exotic smells.
He sold the girls the dresses
He showed them how to wear
And he sold them lots of pretty things
For their feet up to their hair.
Now I’m as old as old as old and as
Thin as thin can be.
And I look back at the angry boy
And chuckle
Merrily.
For that pretty round face
Daily do I see,
Since the girl with the curls
Came off the hill
And said she’d marry
Me!
All hail the man on the hill
With his earrings and his leather boots
And his strange exotic smells.
He sold the girls the dresses
He showed them how to wear
And he sold them lots of pretty things
For their feet up to their…
All hail the man on the hill
With his earrings and his leather boots
And his strange exotic smells.
He sold my girl her dresses
And he showed how to be
The woman with the curls
Who came off the hill
And said she’d marry
Me!
Unit 2: Shopping
The Supermarket Song
Kylie van Dam
I’m going to the supermarket,
What can I buy?
I’ve got banknotes and change,
And an eye on the price.
A shopping list,
And a shopping trolley,
And a hungry hungry tummy….
I’ll get to the check out and I’ll have to pay.
Pounds and pence will fly away.
It all smells delicious to me today…
Shopping when you’re hungry isn’t funny!
Now let’s see,
I’d like some…
Vegetables.
Broccoli and carrots.
Some fruit.
Peaches and strawberries,
Fish, meat and
Sweets.
I went to the supermarket,
What did I buy?
I had banknotes and change,
And an eye on the price.
A shopping list,
And a shopping trolley,
And a hungry hungry tummy….
I got to the check-out and I had to pay.
Pounds and pence they flew away.
It all smells delicious to me today…
Shopping when you’re hungry isn’t…
Shopping when you’re hungry isn’t…
Shopping when you’re hungry…
isn’t funny!!!!!!!
Words to look out for…
Buy: to exchange money for something.
Bye: to say goodbye.
Price: the cost of something.
A person can ‘have an eye on the price’ when they are monitoring how much something costs and if that price changes at all.
If it goes down, maybe they’ll buy it.
Prize: the reward for winning/achieving something, usually at the end of a competition.
A person can have ‘an eye on the prize’ when they are competing for something (e.g. at The Olympics)
or working towards something that is important to them
(e.g. getting good enough grades at school so that they can go to the high-school they want in the future).
Change: when shopping, change can be two things.
It is the collective name for all the coins you have (not notes)
e.g.Mum: ‘How much change do you have?’
Child: ‘I have £6.75 in change (coins)’.
Mum: ‘Great. So with the notes too you have £16.75 all together. You can get a lot of sweets for that!’
Or it is the money given back to you when you buy something,
but need to give more money that it costs, because you don’t have the exact amount.
e.g. Cashier: ‘That comes to £22.75’
Customer: ‘Here’s £25’
Cashier: ‘Thanks. That’s £2.25 change. Bye bye’
Unit 3: Just in Time
Once a Week
Kylie van Dam
2021
Once a week
There is a day
That is
‘Today’.
Not tomorrow.
Not yesterday.
Last week,
Now let me think,
I’m sure there was a
‘Today’
Too.
The Lazy Head Who Bumped Her head on the
Sleeper Train to Italy.
Kylie van Dam
2021
Once I caught the sleeper train to Italy.
Early in the morning the guard rushed in and said
‘Wake up!
Get up!’
I banged my head.
‘You need to rush rush rush.
Get out of bed!’
Oh no!
My Gran always said I was lazy.
Write it down!

If I had a diary,
I’d remember what to do.
Or maybe a calendar on the wall.
I never remember things.
Do you?
Unit 4: Travelling Around
Travel The World
Kylie van Dam
2022
Though departure can break your heart,
And sometimes it’s scary to start,
A journey is how we arrive at this
Glorious bus stop called ‘life’.
You can fly on a plane, you can catch the train,
You can ride your bike, or you can walk in the rain.
You can travel the world, you can go anywhere,
Feet close to the ground or high in the air.
You can fly a balloon, you can catch the bus,
You can drive your car, or you can sail with us.
You can travel the world, you can go anywhere,
Feet close to the ground or high in the air.
North, south, east, west, no way is better and no way is best.
Quickly, slowly, you decide,
Is arrival the thing or the journey the prize?
You can ask your way to a specific address,
You can plan your trip, or you can roll with the mess.
You can travel the world, you can go anywhere,
Feet close to the ground or high in the air.
You can travel the world, you can go anywhere,
Feet close to the ground or high in the air.
You can travel the world, you can go anywhere,
Feet close to the ground or dangling high in the air!
